Demonstration project on the use of 5G technology in railway safety systems
Efacec designed the first 5G level crossing control system, installed as a demonstrator pilot at the railway access to the main Multipurpose Terminal of the Port of Aveiro, and which was presented at the inauguration of the 5GAIner laboratory dedicated to 5G technological innovations and Artificial Intelligence.
5G technology offers more speed and security to meet the communication requirements at rail level crossings, allowing communications between the detection sensors of approaching train trains and level crossing controllers, typically supported on copper cables, to be performed by wireless communications with 5G technology. Additionally, the solution enables high-definition video transmission in real-time between cameras located in the level crossing area and inside the train, thus reinforcing the safety of the entire system.
This development was carried out under the protocol signed between Efacec Engineering and Systems and APA (Aveiro Port Authority), with the support of the European program to support technological development “Horizon 2020”, due to its significant strategic value. The system is currently installed and is undergoing field tests, associated with the verification and validation of the Pilot.
